Hurricane Maria Relief News for Today

Here is the latest news about the relief and recovery efforts in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands due to Hurricane Maria.

Airports and Seaports

The U.S. Coast Guard [9/24/2017] reports the ports of Salinas and Tallaboa are fully open, and the ports of Guayanilla, San Juan, Fajardo, Culebra, Guayama, and Vieques are open with restrictions in Puerto Rico.
The ports of Crown Bay, East Gregerie Channel, West Gregerie Channel, and Redhook Bay on St. Thomas, the ports of Krause Lagoon, Limetree Bay, and Frederiksted on St. Croix, and the port of Cruz Bay on St. John are open with restrictions. Other ports are undergoing assessments.

As of Monday, September 25, limited ferry service is available during daylight hours in Puerto Rico to transport emergency supplies to Vieques and Culebra.

Search and Rescue

Eight FEMA Urban Search & Rescue (US&R) task forces continue to conduct operations in Puerto Rico. To date, the US&R teams rescued 516 lives and two pets, while searching over 2,500 structures.

Water and Power

Temporary Emergency Power assessments are underway in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. With 83 generators in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and nine generators are installed. An additional 186 generators are en route to the impacted area.


Hospitals

In Puerto Rico, power is restored to the following hospitals:Centro Médico Hospital in San Juan, also serving as the HHS Disaster Medical Assistance Team Base of Operations for critical and acute care services AND San Pablo Hospital in Bayamón
The Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital in St. Croix and the Schneider Regional Medical Center Emergency Room in St. Thomas were re-energized and re-established as mobile hospitals over the weekend
More than half of the dialysis centers in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico are now operational.

Both 911 Call Centers in Puerto Rico are operational. St. Thomas VI is partially operational. St. Croix VI is completely down.
91.2 percent of cell sites are out of service. 34/78 counties have no cell service. No county has more than 25 percent of its sites operational.
In the Virgin Islands, 60.4 percent of cell sites are out of service.

New Deliveries

  • 9/26 Twitter: #Maria Update: @FEMA & fed partners have provided +4 million meals, +6 million liters of water, 70,000 tarps; 15,000 rolls of roof sheeting
  • In Puerto Rico, five flights are scheduled to arrive today with mobile communications, helicopters, and medical teams and equipment.
  • In the U.S. Virgin Islands, 11 flights are scheduled to arrive Monday with 200,000 meals, 144,000 liters of water, and tarps.
    Barge movements are scheduled to arrive with over 70,000 tarps, vehicles and relief cargo.
  • USS Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group … delivered 44,177 pounds of relief supplies and cargo to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  • Portlight Inclusive Disaster Strategies is providing 12 generators to Puerto Rico Center for Independent Living and The University Center for Excellence on Developmental Disabilities.
