The Wilson / Plame Affair

She really is invisible, you know. Other than the mentions since the Novak piece, and her name in Wilson's on-line bios, nothing on the Net.

What bothers me is the silence, since she must have done something. Heck, searching my name finds things I wrote in 1985. Did she go to college, publish, anything?

UPDATE: I found this here, which is a copy of a for-fee article from the NY Times here from August 8.

Mr. Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, is known to friends as an energy industry analyst.

In lefty blogs, I see several references to Ms. Plame as working in private industry. She would then be a deep cover agent, or, more likely, a contract employee for the Agency, called in when they needed her particular expertice. Were she a deep cover agent, the potential exists that the CIA violated one of several Federal laws limiting the ways that CIA intelligence officers can masquerade themselves. It sounds like, if she was working as an agent, she would have been gathering economic intelligence. It continues to be the most curious thing about this matter that there is no trace of Valerie Plame on the Net, either as an energy consultant, as an educator or writer, or as anyone at all. is it possible to be an expert on the energy industry, or on WMD proliferation, and not leave a trace on the Net? Does this person exist?

Mentions of Joseph C. Wilson at the State Department site:

  • Charg d'Affaires ad interim, Iraq, at the very bottom of the page
  • Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Gabon

From the Bush Library:

May 13, 1992

The President today announced his intention to nominate Joseph Charles Wilson IV, of California, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Counselor, to be Ambassador to the Gabonese Republic and to serve concurrently without compensation as Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe. He would succeed Keith Leveret Wauchope.

Currently Mr. Wilson serves as a member of the senior seminar at the Foreign Service Institute. From 1988 to 1991, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, and as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Brazzaville, Congo, 1986 - 88.

Mr. Wilson graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara (B.A., 1971). He was born November 6, 1949, in Bridgeport, CT. Mr. Wilson is married, has two children, and resides in Washington, DC.

Note this item and the lack of mention of a wife from 1997:

National Security Advisor Samuel R. Berger announced today the appointment of Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for African Affairs at the National Security Council. He will succeed Susan Rice.

Prior to his appointment, Ambassador Wilson served as the Political Advisor to the Commander-in-Chief of United States Armed Forces, Europe, from 1995 to 1997. He served as the U.S. Ambassador to Gabon and to Sao Tome and Principe from 1992 to 1995. From 1988 to 1991, Ambassador Wilson served in Baghdad, Iraq as Deputy Chief of Mission. Prior to the launching of Operation Desert Storm, he was responsible for negotiating the release of several hundred American hostages held by the Iraqi government.

Ambassador Wilson, a career member of the Foreign Service, previously served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Bujumbura, Burundi and Brazzaville, Congo. His other assignments include tours in Niger, Togo and South Africa. As an American Political Science Association Congressional Fellow, he worked in the offices of then-Senator Albert Gore and then-House Majority Whip, Representative Thomas Foley.

Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and raised in California, Ambassador Wilson received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He has a daughter and a son.
Clinton Library

Another on-line bio that mentions his wife by name. This is from a company that lobbies for Turkey. He is listed as a strategic advisor.
