Thursday, September 25, 2003Lonsberry a Racist?Bob Lonsberry remains suspended from his talk show today as a deluge of community leaders descend upon the open mics of various news media to denounce his racism . Lonsberry, a popular talk show host for Clear Channel's 50,000 watt WHAM talk radio station, make comments that appeared to indicate a similarity between Rochester's mayor, Bill Johnson, and an orangutan that made a temporary escape from the Seneca Park zoo a few days before. Johnson, a Democrat, black, and mayor of the city for almost a decade, is a candidate for county executive against Lonsberry's friend Maggie Brooks. Link Link Lonsberry has a checkered hsitory and a well earned reputation as being provocative and blunt in the extreme, As does, oddly enough, Bill Johnson. A local TV station ran an unscientific poll that suggests that, 3-1, people want Lonsberry to keep his job. The discourse on this matter has degenerated so far that a group of "regligious" leaders, including the ultra-liberal Bishop of the local Roman Catholic Diocese, has called for a better apology than the one which he made (three times now by my count). The county Democratic chairperson has called for his firing and criticized candidate Maggie Brooks for not speaking out against Lonsberry sooner or stronger. Lonsberry, on any given day, is a jerk, a sexist pig, an asshole. In other words, he does his job, which is to provoke controversy on his talk show. The over-reaction to his remarks reflects poorly on Johnson, his supporters, the "religious" leaders, et. al. He did not call Johnson an orangutan. In deed, the remarks involved used Johnson's name and the orangutan mention if the same paragraph, and were, at best, broken and disjointed sentances, near babble. Grow up, people. I learned a long time ago in college that you can't expect assholes to be anything but assholes. Get over it. And, in my opinion, the actual insult is to orangutans. Bill Johnson has a horrible record as mayor. If this were Iraq, the murder rate alone would have all these folks call for our withdrawal. Johnson has a rep as a bully. He's provoked confrontation after confrontation, with the school board, with the county executive, with the Town of Greece. He had to have the Sheriff and State Police come in to the city for about eight weeks earlier this year because the violence had gotten so out-of-control that the city police could no longer handle it alone. Maybe the state of the city is what these community and "religious" leaders ought to be worried about, not the remarks of a well-known jerk. -- posted by Chuck at Thursday, September 25, 2003 | E-mail | Permalink | Main | 0 comments
