French Government

Since the U.S. Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787, France has had:

Absolute monarchy (1787-1789)
Constitutional monarchy (1789-1792)
First Republic (1792-1804)
First Empire (1804-1814)
Bourbon restoration (1814-1815)
Napoleonic restoration (1815)
Second Bourbon restoration (1815-1830)
Orleanist monarchy (1830-1848)
Second Republic (1848-1852)
Second Empire (1852-1870)
Third Republic (1870-1940)
Vichyite collaborationist government (1940-1944)
Provisional Gaullist government (1944-1947)
Fourth Republic (1947-1958)
Fifth Republic (1958-today, at least)

Please remember that most of the changes of governmental form were violent and many resulted from catastrophic mis-leadership. Clemenceau, asked which candidate he supported for President of the Third Republic, replied, �I�m voting for the stupidest.� For all their �sophistication,� it often looks like the French often get him.
