Last year, Ottawa reported it had lost track of 91 war criminals who'd come to Canada and then disappeared before they could be deported. When National Post reporter Stewart Bell filed an Access to Information request to find out who these people were, he was rebuffed. CIC bureaucrats said releasing biographical data to police or journalists could lead to "vigilantism." They also complained that releasing the data might lead to Canadians phoning in tips about the criminals' whereabouts. That was a problem, they said, because they did not have the "infrastructure" to process the information.
