Monday, July 07, 2003DeathOn June 5, 1944 at least 3,700 American, British, Canadian and other allied soldiers died. In one day. In the entirety of World War II, just over 407,000 members of the United States armed services died. On average, 298 Americans died every day of World War Two. In Vietnam we averaged thirteen deaths a day. Since the Liberation of Iraq began, about 254 soldiers have died. That averages out to just over two per day. Death is always cruel and a waste. In war men and women often die for no particular reason, no great purpose. You're just as dead if you die in a truck crash as if you win the Medal of Honor charging a pillbox. I understand the general sentiment about the deaths in Iraq. No one should die standing in line in a university cafeteria waiting for ice cream. No one should die, period. But I suspect that most of the purveyors of tragedy over the deaths in Iraq have more on their minds that that. The cry is that George Bush is wasting American lives with this war. Each death is his fault, and his alone. If it were not for the greed of America, these young men and women would be alive today. Of course, this logic ignores the person who actually pulled the trigger. The criminal or Baathist thug who threw the bomb or set off the mine. It's not their fault; it's George Bush's. If we hadn't invaded Iraq, they wouldn't be killing Americans.
Who did we invade to cause this, morons? It's precisely because we failed, for nearly a decade, to defend ourselves and freedom around the world that al Qaeda and Saddam and all the other pig boys of the world felt free to kill Americans. Now, at last, we are taking the fight to them. The pond scum Islamofascists are dying for a change. Every American that dies is one too many. But, that is the nature of war. And this war is costing our enemies far more than it is us. Terrorists are dying by the hundreds, by the thousands. And our sacrifices are making the world a safer place to be an American. It will take time. It will cost American lives. But we're giving far better than we're getting. And we're winning. Take heart, my fellow Americans, and stay the course. We're winning, and the fruits of victory will be sweet. Liberty and justice for all will have a new meaning for millions of people who were without hope, without recourse, without everything that we hold dear. We will defeat terrorism, and freedom from fear will be a gift to this planet that will resonate for generations. -- posted by Chuck at Monday, July 07, 2003 | E-mail | Permalink | Main | 0 comments
